Contrary to the common belief that learning is primarily facilitated by external instruction, true learning stems from within, through self-reflection.

When instructors disseminate information, they are merely providing the materials necessary for learning, not the learning itself. This distinction is crucial, as understanding what learning entails is often misunderstood.

Reflection is the Key

Learning is not merely about acquiring information; it is about comprehending it. Comprehension starts at the basic level of being able to recall information.

This foundational step involves memorization and recollection of facts, such as historical dates, events, and figures. This knowledge is essential for the initial phase of learning, as it forms the basis for further understanding.

The next step transcends mere recollection to the application of knowledge. This involves using the information to solve problems or demonstrate a deeper understanding of concepts beyond just facts.

Transitioning from knowledge to application requires reflection, where the meaning is derived and internalized, enabling practical application.

What the Air Force taught me?

For instance, in the Air Force, professional military exams are designed to assess application rather than just knowledge.

These exams pose multiple-choice questions that require selecting the “best” answer from several correct options, demanding a deep understanding of the material.

My personal strategy involved initial memorization of facts, followed by days of reflection on their practical applications and relevance. This method of internal questioning and reflection significantly improved my ability to apply knowledge effectively.

The efficacy of this approach was proven through my experience with military exams. Without reflection, my performance was based purely on luck.

However, by incorporating reflection, I was able to deeply understand and apply the knowledge, leading to consistent success. This technique underscored the importance of reflection in transforming raw information into practical knowledge.
